Is it a good idea to use 1'' plywood with a nice finish to make stair treads
Is plywood sturdy enough? l am looking for an inexpensive alternative to
hardwood. l would install a bullnose on the edges of the plywood.
Even if you glue and nail the bullnose on the treads - it has
the potential to breakoff and cause injury. You can purchase treads with
just an oak veneer on them. If you go ahead and do plywood, first put a
good sealer on the edge - let it dry before glueing on the bullnose.
Plywood open edges are very porous and you need to seal it with
polyurethane then glue on the bullnose.
if u want cheap.do it the way the way the old timers did, get u
some 2x12 pine and cut it to fit and stain it...u can roll the front for ur
bull nose...

I wouldn't try to acheive a finished looking stair tread &
riser using Plywood.. #1 plywood doesn't come STANDARD 1'' thick.. & a
piece of 3/4'' oak finished one side will cost about $ 80.00 then you will
still have to finish the face with some type of bull-nose trim. If you
don't protect the front-face of the tread . after time , it will start
de-laminating..If yor going to carpet over the stairs , then fine , use
3/4 '' underlamement.I suggest . spending the $$ on pre finished 'OAK' Stair treads & 'OAK' dimensional lumber for the Riser's.. Pre finished Oak stair treads really aren't that expensive. especially when you consider CUTTING a 4x8 sheet of plywood then having to trim it out then 3 or 4 coats of ''polyureathane'' . That all add is up to more than buying the pre- finished stuff.
No, do it the right way, you have to install a nosing on stairs
and hardwood behind, its no big deal.
Yes. True plywood, & not strandboard or waferboard will be
plenty sturdy enough. You could probably get by with 3/4'' normally but 1
inch would be the best route, especially when moving heavy furniture
upstairs. I have seen several homes under construction that use thick
plywood, & the stairs I walked on were sturdy & did not wiggle or creak.
Just make sure that you have a good, tight fit & secure the boards properly. I am assuming you are going to cover it with carpet or otherwise finish it. Good luck!
as long as you support the treads - risers??i spose if your
not looking for the open plan look??
